Facebook has banned Britain First’s page and the pages of Mr Paul Golding and Ms Jayda Fransen stating that whilst Facebook supported “all ideas and political speech” Britain First had “repeatedly broken [it’s] Community Standards”.

The social media platform in a statement said: “There are times…when legitimate political speech crosses the line and becomes hate speech designed to stir up hatred against groups in our society”.

The statement continued: “Content posted on the Britain First Facebook Page and the Pages of party leaders Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen has repeatedly broken our Community Standards. We recently gave the administrators of the Pages a written final warning, and they have continued to post content that violates our Community Standards”.

The page had been noted for its highly inflammatory postings against minorities, primarily Muslims, in the past and is the primary reason why Facebook has decided to remove the page.

The statement added: “…they [Britain First] have repeatedly posted content designed to incite animosity and hatred against minority groups, which disqualifies the Pages from our service”.

Facebook will also prevent the group from setting up replacement pages.

London Mayor, Mr Sadiq Khan said in a statement: “Britain First is a vile and hate-fuelled group. Their sick intentions to incite hatred within our society via social media are reprehensible, and Facebook’s decision to remove their content is welcome”.

Prime Minister Theresa May also made mention to the incident whilst addressing the House of Commons saying she was “very pleased to welcome the action that Facebook has taken” and hoped “other companies will follow”.

Britain First’s ban from Facebook means that their social presence has all but diminished as they were also suspended from Twitter last year. It is important to note that their social media presence has been suggested to be a significant driver in their growth.

The leaders of Britain First, Mr Paul Golding and Ms Jayda Fransen, were jailed last week for a number of religiously aggravated offences for 18 and 36 weeks, respectively.
