Cardiff for Processions 2018

Categories: Past Event Articles

Friday August 31 2018

In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave the first British women the right to vote and stand for public office. One hundred years on, women and girls across the UK marked this historic moment on Sunday 10th of June as part of a living portrait of women in the 21st century. Welsh Muslim women artists and MEND volunteers in Cardiff came together to design a banner that represents them as part of this celebratory mass participation artwork. The banner had the colours of the suffragette movement; green, white and violet in the background with an image that symbolises the diversity of Muslim women. The Arabic word Huriyya, which means freedom was added to imply that women have the complete freedom to express their faith and identity the way they want. Finally, the banner was headed by a famous quote from the Islamic scholar; Ibn Al-Qayyim “Women are half of the society, who give birth to the other half and thus they are the whole society”.
