Members of Manchester mosque gutted by fire after ‘arson attack’ are offered a new venue

The Manchester Evening News reports that Manchester Council has offered a new venue for worshippers of the Manchester Nasfat Islamic Centre, in Newton Heath.

The Mosque was attacked eight times in the last four years, with the latest arson attack of July 16 resulting in complete devastation. While the local community offered food and water to members, as well as help to rebuild the Mosque, the council stepped in making the Stirling Community Centre in Newton Heath available.

Branch secretary Monsurat Adebanjo-Aremu was humbled by the offers and support from the community of Greater Manchester, but raised questions for long-term solutions: “We do feel that the problem has been brushed under the carpet. We are meeting with the police this evening and we hope that they will come up with a plan to protect us.”

Mr Monsurat also added: “Hate crime is often under-reported for a number of reasons, but people should have the confidence in coming forward, as no one should be the subject of hate and intolerance.”
