On the 19th November, MEND curated a poetry and zine workshop for the wider community with the support of Madein Roath’s community creative space and Cardiff’s Chaii Green’s sponsorship.
This creative session drew inspiration from this year’s Islamophobia Awareness Month theme #MuslimStories and the artistic power of storytelling. The workshop began with a mindfulness exercise followed by a poetry session, where we explored various poems around belonging, identity and personal experiences that inspired our free writing exercises. We heard some powerful and moving free written stories from women from all walks of life and backgrounds. We learnt how we can platform important issues such as islamophobia and Palestine through creative expression. We also had casual discussions about some of our current community projects and what we can do to tackle Islamophobia over chai and food! To conclude the workshop we were shown how to make a Zine and how we could show our journeys and intrusive thoughts through it with or without words.
This gathering served as a catalyst for unity, fostering a supportive environment where women explored their potential as change-makers. Through shared stories, participants discovered the intrinsic power within their narratives and recognised the collective strength that emerges when women come together.
