On Thursday 4th of May, MEND North was invited by Lancaster University to speak on Islamophobia and various discourses around the subject. Speakers from other organisations covered various aspects of Islamophobia.
Dr Madeline started the event with a discussion on institutional Islamophobia and racism in society. She delved into her critique of the PREVENT strategy and the issues that surround it.
MEND North discussed the definition of Islamophobia and the lack of representation of Muslims in media and politics. Attendees were given examples of rife Islamophobia and why the work in tackling it is so important.
Sameeha from Community Policy Forum discussed the media negativity of Muslims in-depth and the issues of headlines fuelling Islamophobia.
The online event ended with a Q&A in which attendees asked interesting questions that were very thought-provoking.
Thank you to Dr Madeline Abbas for organising the thought-provoking event!
