Northern Nationalist demonstration in Newcastle cut short

Northern Nationalist demonstration in Newcastle cut short

Categories: Latest News

Friday August 11 2017

On 29 July, a far-right Northern Nationalist protest in Newcastle was cut short due to a counter-demonstration that outnumbered the Northern Nationalists.

The Northern Nationalists gathered at Grey’s Monument in central Newcastle. Members of the far-right group began to hurl anti-Catholic and anti-Irish insults at Celtic footfall fans who were on their way to a match in Sunderland. Police did not intervene to stop the verbal abuse, according to the Socialist Party.

However, before members of progressive counter-demonstrators arrived, local working class individuals began challenging the hateful rhetoric of the far-right demonstrators. The police issued warnings to these individuals, the Socialist Party reports. Ultimately the counter-demonstrators outnumbered the far-right demonstrators, and the protest lasted only 40 minutes.

“We commend all who stood in unity, solidarity and participated in the counter-demonstration,” the Socialist Party stated.
